Roots by Land
TOUR DURATION : 1 FULL DAY
This is a very historical tour that educates you a lot about the facts and figures of slavery and the impacts it has around the Globe of which The Gambia is not an exception.
It’s a full day tour that starts at 7:30am and ends between 4-5pm. We will drive to join the ferry at Banjul which is very interesting due to the crowd, lorries and animals we will see on board while cruising to the north bank of the country (“Barra”).
We will drive past villages before reaching ‘Juffurreh and Albreda’ which is believed to be the birth place of ‘Kunta Kinteh’, about whom the novel “Roots” by American author Alex Haley is based.
We will visit a slave museum wherein we will learn of the different Europeans that took part in slavery and the inhuman equipment used to maltreat the slaves.
A visit to the family of ’Kunta Kinteh’ and then a boat trip to the ‘Kunta Kinteh‘ island (James Island) which is part of the UNISCO world heritage site, where slaves used to await ships for transportation to the new world.
Lunch will be served at a restaurant before driving back to Barra to join the ferry to Banjul, where our transport awaits to drive us back to the hotel.
